Chola Dal (Bengal Gram with Coconut)

Ingredients

ghee
2 tbsp
coconut cut into 0.25 cm thick 0.5 cm squares
1/4 cup
mustard oil
5 tbsp
whole dry red chillies

bay leaves

cloves

cinnamon
2 sticks ( 2.5 cm each)
green cardamoms

cumin seeds
1 tsp
ginger chopped
10 g
green chillies slit
6
jaggery crushed
15 g
Bengal gram
2 cups
turmeric powder
1 tsp
salt
3.5 tsp
water
3.25 cups

Method

In a pan, heat 1 tbsp ghee for about 1 minute. Add coconut and fry till light brown. Remove and keep aside. Heat oil in cooker for about 2 minutes. Add red chillies, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon, cardamoms and cumin seeds. Stir for a few seconds. Add coconut and all other ingredients except water and remaining ghee. Stir fry for about 2 minutes. Add water. Stir. Close cooker. Bring to full pressure on high heat. Reduce heat and cook for 6 minutes. Remove cooker from heat. Allow to cool naturally. Open cooker. Pour remaining ghee (1 tbsp) evenly over dal. Serve hot.
